Instructional Designer – Ottawa, Canada | Permanent

Our client is a global organization in the Ottawa area and is adding an Instructional Designer to their Learning and Development team. This is a new role for the learning division of the organization and an opportunity to build on the foundation of success which has been established thus far. 

This department is responsible for the global delivery of programs to both internal and external resources and the organization has recently received accreditation. Course of studies will vary and continuously evolve, and are supported by research, quality assurance processes and certification standards. As a key member of the LD team, this role will participate in Training Boards with other stakeholders and will provide input into workflow and scheduling according to training needs.  Courses of study are executed through a variety of means such as interactive lectures, gamification, synchronous and asynchronous courses, etc.  Candidates who will be considered must demonstrate their expertise instructional design through a variety of mediums including online, e-learning, in class, etc.  Creative and immersive ways of delivering content may also include gamification, AI or VR technology. Examples of well-structured interactive lectures, small group activities, case studies or peer learning activities will be required as part of a portfolio of prior design and execution content.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Candidates will “own” and deliver on multiple training projects on an ongoing basis
  • Candidates must stay current with emerging and state-of-the-art technologies, methodologies and trends in order to continuously add creative and engaging ways to deliver and retain course content
  • Descriptive and formatted training and assessment specifications will be developed along with client/stakeholder/training representatives to determine the desired learning outcome, the standard to be met, and to blueprint courses
  • Collaborate with key team members in content and creative design of the course such as working with designers to develop infographics or gamification models
  • Participate in training evaluations as well as participating in continuous self-learning in order to cross train and support other functions such as LMS Management

Requirements for this role:

  • Minimum 5 years of progressive experience as an Instructional Designer
  • Post-secondary academic qualifications in education, instructional design, technology
  • Exceptional verbal and written English language skills
  • Portfolio of work showcasing tone, creativity, use of variety of authorware (eg. Elucidat) and learning aids; demonstrable learning and development/instructional design experience in both group settings and 1:1 environments, e-learning, virtual, etc. 
  • Prior experience in working with a variety of Learning Management Systems (eg. Absord)
  • Demonstrated expertise in leveraging technology in unique and engaging ways as part of the learning process to showcase information more visually stimulating, ensuring audience interaction and retention
  • Demonstrated experience working with highly complex information and detail, and the ability to synthesize content to ensure knowledge easily retained
  • Demonstrated experience in leveraging emerging research in education to improve on course content and delivery best practices
  • Demonstrated experience in improvement of efficiencies and effectiveness of training plans and course content
  • Demonstrated experience and expertise in partnering with creative specialists in building out multimedia components, gamification elements, or course content
  • Excellent interpersonal skills along with excellent verbal and written English language communication skills
